R-ace GP’s Gabriel Gandulia and ScoRace Team’s Phil Hill topped a practice session apiece in preparation for the 2018 Formula Renault Northern European Cup (NEC) season finale at Hockenheim today [21st September].
The Argentine set the pace in an overcast opening session around the 2.8 mile Baden-Wurttemberg venue with the quickest overall lap of the day – a 1:39.454 as the French equipe look to secure back-to-back Teams’ titles this weekend.
Championship leader Doureid Ghattas followed in second with Hill a further three tenths of a second adrift alongside new team mate Sharon Scolari.
The order switched around in second practice, with Hill taking top spot on new tyres, though he was unable to better Gandulia’s morning benchmark by a tenth of a second in a session hit by spots of rain in the closing stages.
Gandulia and Ghattas lived up to the NEC’s reputation of producing close racing with the top three blanketed by a mere 0.3 seconds heading into qualifying for the title-deciding double header.
The input of a second driver into the ScoRace Team seems to be paying dividends for Scolari, with another fourth and season-best pace for the Swiss racer as she looks to end a mixed debut campaign on a high.
The weekend continues with the opening Qualifying session at 09:00 CEST tomorrow [22nd September].
