R-ace GP’s Gabriel Gandulia claimed pole position for the opening Formula Renault Northern European Cup (NEC) contest at the Nurburgring this morning [15th September] to give the Argentine’s title chances a boost.
Gandulia, who lit up the time sheets during both free practice sessions, clocked a best time of 1:58.673 around the 3.1 mile GP Strecke to replicate his qualifying form from Budapest a fortnight ago and give himself the best possible opportunity to secure his maiden victory.
Championship leader Doureid Ghattas will share the front row with Gandulia and – crucially – starts just ahead of his team-mate, compatriot and chief title adversary Phil Hill, with the gap in the championship standings a mere 10 points.
The last four rounds at Spa and the Hungaroring have been decided between the pair, and with Anders Motorsport on a four-race winning streak it could prove fascinating at the front as Gandulia bids to keep it a three-way title battle.
Sharon Scolari rounds out the quartet on her and ScoRace Team’s return to the highly competitive series, with the Eifel Mountains set to play host to another fascinating chapter in the 2018 title fight at 12:45 CEST.
