Gabriel Gandulia lights up the timesheets in Nurburgring practice

R-ace GP’s Gabriel Gandulia set out his stall as the man to beat by topping both Formula Renault Northern European Cup (NEC) practice sessions at the Nurburgring today [14th September].

His initial effort of 1:57.932 seconds around the infamous 3.1 mile GP-Strecke proved enough to head up the field in the morning session, and he duly went three tenths of a second quicker after lunch to throw down the gauntlet to championship leader Doureid Ghattas and fellow title contender Phil Hill on a crucial weekend in the title fight for the Argentine.

The double-header in the Eifel Mountains marks the first of two consecutive home events for the Anders Motorsport pairing to conclude the season, with a mere 10 points splitting them in the points table.

Ghattas’ advantage in FP1 measured some seventh tenths, but an improved effort from Hill in the second session reduced that deficit to a mere tenth as the former karting rivals worked towards an optimal setup for qualifying tomorrow.

The championship welcomes back Sharon Scolari and the ScoRace Team at the Nurburgring, with the Swiss registering fourth in both sessions on her return to keep her ambitions of becoming the first female podium finisher in the NEC’s 13-year history on course.

The identity of the pole-sitter for the opening race tomorrow remains anybody’s call, with qualifying set to get underway in Germany at 08:45 CEST.
