R-ace GP’s Gabriel Gandulia hopes to continue his strong start to the 2018 Formula Renault Northern European Cup (NEC) season as the circus moves to the world-famous Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on 27-29 July.
Gandulia has finished a de-facto second among the full-season entries – and therefore those eligible for the title – in each of the opening four rounds in Pau and Monza thus far, and with previous testing mileage at the 4.35 mile circuit during the winter, as well as recent simulation work, the Argentine is once again aiming for a strong set of results.
He also arrives in the Ardennes Forest level on points at the top of the standings with Anders Motorsport’s Doureid Ghattas – and with the latter’s team mate Phil Hill just a further six points behind, a typically hard-fought battle for the championship is starting to take shape.
“I have good expectations for the weekend at Spa,” commented Gandulia.
“Everything will be really special for me, especially being at such a high-profile event alongside the Formula Renault Eurocup drivers – and in support of the Spa 24h – on such a famous circuit.
“Yesterday [17th July] I trained at Aotech with the team at R-ace GP and I tested at Spa during February so I hope the net result of all of that will be even better results than at Monza last time out, and to continue improving across the weekend.”
He also dismissed premature thoughts about winning the title, insisting that, at the moment, the focus has to be on developing with the 2.0 litre, Tatuus-build Formula Renault car that has seen so many international motorsport stars develop their race-craft, as well as achieving a level of consistency.
“I’m not even thinking about the championship at the moment,” he continued.
“Any result I achieve is just a consequence of being fast with the car, and that comes from hard work. My main objective remains working with the aim to be faster and with a good level of consistency.”
