Doureid Ghattas made the perfect start to the 2018 Formula Renault Northern European Cup (NEC) finale at the Hockenheimring, securing pole position to put himself in the best possible position to secure the coveted title in the opening race this afternoon [22nd September].
The Anders Motorsport racer clocked a best time of 1:38.747 seconds around the 2.8 mile Baden-Wurttemberg circuit, eclipsing R-ace GP driver Gabriel Gandulia by just under two tenths of a second.
Any finishing position will be good enough for the German Formula 4 graduate as he chases a maiden international single-seater crown, whilst R-ace GP’s commanding 37 point advantage in the Teams’ standings will surely secure the French equipe back-t0-back titles barring a disaster later today.
ScoRace Team lock out the second row of the grid, with new arrival Phil Hill heading up team mate Sharon Scolari, with the top three blanketed by 0.4 seconds.
“It feels good to have pole position,” said Ghattas.
“For sure, there was a little bit more potential, I made a few mistakes on my lap but it was a good one. I’m going into the race feeling motivated and the aim isn’t just to finish, but to win. The season isn’t over yet, and we’ll be giving it our best.”
The opening race of the weekend gets underway at 13:35 CEST, with live coverage available on the Renault Sport Series’ social media platforms and the official Formula Renault YouTube channel.
